The Marshfield Groundwater Guardians volunteer group in 2005 embarked on a mission to educate the public regarding the proper disposal of unused pharmaceuticals. The public was advised that the disposal of unused pharmaceuticals into a toilet or drain could NOT be removed with normal wastewater treatment methods.
Pharmaceutical Take-Back events were scheduled and in February, 2008, a permanent pharmaceutical take-back location was established at the City of Marshfield Police Department (110 W 1st St). Groundwater Guardian volunteers continue to sort through the collection, twice a year at the Marshfield Police Department, to recycle non-med and transfer meds to U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) / U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) approved containers for their transportation to final destruction.
From 2005 through 2020 approximately 15,252 pounds of unused pharmaceuticals have been collected at this location.
